I know what you mean by the 77>early 80's NFAs grinding on, but at least they were jamming, and it often created a hypnotic, narcotic, feel . When it got placed in the final post Throwing Stones, end of concert clap along , the jamming gets cuts to a minimum ( yes there are some exception). At first it was kind of novel, going back to the Buddy Holly version . But It very soon outlasted it's welcome . My faves are those late 71 ones mentioned, where both NFA, and GDTRFB are taken for long drives , AND they still have the rootsy, country feel, that gets lost somewhere in the 80's .

For my money it's from the Dick's Picks show of 12/29/77

NFA>PLAYIN' IN THE BAND REPRISE.

Absolutely serious hardcore rock and roll....laser focused...listen to Jerry practically spit out the "I tried to show you but you drive me BACK!" line...Jamming is unreal.
